Hot wallets
A hot wallet keeps key-management software available on an internet-connected device. This makes signing and checking transactions convenient, but an exposed device, malicious extension or compromised application can increase risk.
Cold wallets
Cold storage keeps signing keys away from an internet-connected environment for much of the time. Hardware wallets are one common example. Cold storage can reduce online exposure, but users still need to protect the device, recovery information and transaction approval process.
There is no universal winner
The best choice depends on how often funds are used, how much operational complexity the user can manage and what threats they face. Security comes from the whole process—not simply from a product label.
A layered approach
Many users separate active spending from longer-term storage. Whatever setup is used, keep software updated, verify transaction details on the trusted screen, protect recovery information offline and avoid approving unexpected requests.
